New Delhi Weather, When to Go and New Delhi Climate Information

In general, India features three main seasons, hot, wet and cool. New Delhi's weather and climate will always play an important part in when you choose to visit. Sited on the northern side of India, close to mountains and away from the coastline, the weather in New Delhi is quite different to the climatic conditions of more southerly locations.
The climate in New Delhi is categorised as tropical, due to its constant high temperatures throughout the year. However, between April and September in New Delhi, the weather quickly changes and endless sunshine results in highs of more than 35°C / 95°F, often reaching around 40°C / 104°F.

Many people choose to visit New Delhi during October and November, and also in February and March, when the climate is at its more favourable. At this time of the year, you can expect plenty of sunny weather, fairly low levels of rainfall and pleasant temperatures.
Even during January, New Delhi's coldest month, you can still expect daytime temperatures to exceed 20°C / 68°F, although the nights can be quite chilly, with cold fronts arriving from the Himalayas. Worth noting, December and January are known for their foggy conditions, often making driving difficult at times.
The hot summer climate in New Delhi often results in water shortages, arid spells and dusty conditions. This heat wave peaks during May, when temperatures average 39°C / 102°F. At this time of the year, much of the city comes to life during the warm, evenings and nights, when the sun goes down.
Although the temperatures remain high in July and August, the weather again changes dramatically, as the monsoon season arrives. Typical of the tropics, the rain showers can be heavy, with precipitation levels of 200 mm / 7.9 inches for each of these months. The average annual precipitation in New Delhi is around 700 mm / 27.5 inches.
